It is my favorite time of the year, the Halloween season! It is the time of the year for pumpkins, hayrides, mugs of hot chocolate, and of course – spooky stories. So here are a few books that go bump in the night.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is a bit of an oldie but a goodie. Many of you might know the title since Netflix made an adaptation of THOHH a few years ago. Buckle up because the book is a wholly different ride. One of my favorites.
Monster She Wrote: The Women who Pioneered Horror and Speculative Fiction by Lisa Kröger this non-fiction title was really neat. Separated into the different types of horror and speculative fiction, each area highlights the female authors that did it best. Be careful, this added a ton of books and authors to my reading list.
The Deep by Alma Katsu this book is a bit different. Titanic meets ghosts, quite literally. After surviving the sinking of the Titanic, Annie takes a job on its sister ship the Britannic as a nurse during the war. Here she meets another Titanic survivor. A man who makes her face the demons she thought she forgot.
Weird Women: Classical Supernatural Fiction by Groundbreaking Female Writers (1852-1923) by Lisa Morton this book is a collection of supernatural stories. It features works from Louisa May Alcott (author of Little Women), Charlotte Perkins Gillman, Elizabeth Gaskell, and many others. It has ghosts, mummies, werewolves, and more!
