In an era where wellness trends frequently shift, yoga remains a steadfast practice, offering profound insights into self-discovery and inner peace. For many, including seasoned practitioners Sue Nesler and Savitri Atma Kaur Khalsa, yoga is more than physical exercise; it’s a lifelong journey toward understanding and harmony.

Sue Nesler’s encounter with yoga at age 25 marked a turning point in her life. Previously trapped in a relentless cycle of work and rest, Nesler found yoga provided not just physical relaxation but a deeper connection to herself.

“Yoga doesn’t have a beginning or an end,” Nesler says. “It’s a journey. It’s your connection with your self – your highest self, your best self, your favorite self.”

Khalsa’s path began with a Rodney Yee DVD at age 15 and evolved into a profound commitment to Kundalini yoga. Her extensive training with esteemed teachers has positioned her at the forefront of yoga education, where she imparts her deep knowledge to diverse students.

Together, Nesler and Khalsa explore the concept of the koshas, or layers of being, integral to yogic philosophy. The koshas describe five interconnected layers that contribute to a holistic sense of self. They are:

Physical Body (Annamaya Kosha) — This outer layer is the tangible aspect of our being — the “soul sack” that houses our essence. Maintaining physical health is essential, but it represents only the starting point of a deeper inward journey.

Pranic Body (Pranamaya Kosha) — This layer embodies our vital energy, or life force, which sustains and invigorates the physical body. Practices such as breath work are crucial for keeping this energy flowing and vibrant.

Sheath (Manomaya Kosha) — The realm of thoughts, emotions and perceptions, this layer dictates how we interpret and interact with the world. A balanced mind is vital for managing life’s ups and downs effectively.

Intellectual Sheath (Vijnanamaya Kosha) — Home to wisdom, intuition and discernment, this layer helps us make informed decisions and grasp deeper truths, aligning our actions with our highest values.

Bliss Sheath (Anandamaya Kosha) — The innermost layer, where true joy and contentment reside. Accessing this state requires harmonizing all other koshas, representing the ultimate goal of yogic practice.

Understanding and nurturing these layers through yoga can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Nesler and Khalsa emphasize yoga is not just about physical postures but about integrating these layers to achieve overall harmony.

“If you can do it on your yoga mat, you can do it in your life — whatever ‘it’ is,” Nesler says.

Yoga provides a framework for personal growth, whether seeking physical health, mental clarity or spiritual peace.

For beginners, Nesler and Khalsa recommend approaching yoga with patience and respect. The journey through the koshas is gradual, and true transformation unfolds over time.

In a chaotic world, the koshas offer a structured path to inner peace and self-understanding. Embracing this journey through yoga allows individuals to connect with their highest selves and live harmoniously. Remember, the essence of yoga lies not in the destination but in the ongoing journey itself.
